Would I Really Rather be 40 Than Pregnant?

My mother-in-law gave me a gift for my birthday. It was a mug that my father in law gave her when she turned forty and it read “I’d Rather be 40 Than Pregnant.” For many women, the women who have struggled with infertility or who long for motherhood, I know it’s far from funny. My heart goes out to each of them. And then there are those exhausted mamas out there who, like me, are reeling from the last decade of motherhood… The joke makes me smile and brings up all the feelings. So far, forty feels just right. The last decade was filled with diapers, cribs, and car seats. [...]

How You Show Up Is More Important Than What You Give Up

January is almost over and I am finally able to sit down and write out my intentions for the year and share them with you. I don’t do resolutions. I feel like they set us up for unrealistic expectations and also infer that there is something to resolve or to fix about ourselves. And while I have my own perfectionistic  tendencies that want to insist that “yes, in fact, there is a lot to fix!”  I am now able to breathe deep through that and allow all my parts to come to the table, even the imperfect ones.     January is a great time to check in with your [...]

The Secret to Dealing With Panic and Being Present For Bliss

Not long ago, someone I know needed help. I got a phone call that stopped me in my tracks. It was like time stood still and my lungs quit working as my mind spun. My whole body was shaking. But I needed to respond, to find a way to help. I needed to be in the moment and I needed to be strong. This moment was breath-taking - but not in the way we generally use that term. I had literally lost my breath and I had to dive deep to find it. I needed to breathe in order to take the next right action. Fear has the power to make [...]

The Daring Way™: My Story, Your Story, Our Story

I just found out - in the midst of an already over-scheduled fall and a particularly busy work day -  that I am finally official. I have completed my certification for the Daring Way™. I read the email, smiled, and kept moving on - forgetting to savor the moment, forgetting to acknowledge my accomplishment. I do that a lot, I’ve realized. I move on without pausing to rest in satisfaction over what I have accomplished. So now, I am trying to make a practice of slowing it down. I’m trying to consciously spend some time recognizing and celebrating the work I have done - both when it comes to this [...]

When Worry Gets in the Way of Holiday Cheer

“Everything’s so great right now. Clearly, it’s just a matter of time before the other shoe drops…” You know this feeling, it comes with all the old stories that go something like “If it looks too good to be true, it probably is…” But what if you stopped challenging your own happiness and let yourself actually feel it? Believe it or not, that “feeling it” can be one of the scariest things to do.   When fears about the worst case scenario cloud the sweetest mundane moments It’s rare that I get to spend time with my parents without the kids around, but we  recently spent a special afternoon together, [...]

Gratitude as a Lived, Everyday Practice, Not Just a Holiday Tradition

Giving thanks is steeped in our history as an American people… We all have our own ways of doing this, whether it’s speaking about what we’re thankful for when family and friends gather for turkey or something you do on your own. Thank goodness we have a holiday that puts gratitude front and center. There is so much research out there now on why this little practice of giving thanks is healing and changing lives for the better. Gratitude helps us choose joy over fear and conscious presence over anxiety. That sounds like something we always need though, doesn’t it? What if gratitude wasn’t just a “Thanksgiving thing”? What if [...]
